Senator Mensch Encourages PA Students to Participate in the “Talk to Your State Senator” Statewide Video Competition

Harrisburg –Senator Bob Mensch (R-24) is encouraging all Pennsylvania students, grades 6-12, to participate in the “Talk To Your State Senator” Statewide Video Competition.  This contest is being sponsored by the Senate of Pennsylvania with support from the Drug and Alcohol Service Providers of Pennsylvania (DASPOP).
“On a daily basis, both national and local media portray stories of heroin overdoses, underage drinking, and death by automobile accidents caused by driving under the influence,” said Mensch.  “Although the state legislature has passed new laws on these topics, we recognize there is more work to be done.  Our mission is to prevent and reduce these potentially life altering negative activities.  We recognize it is important to engage today, those very students who may be affected tomorrow.  Therefore, the Senate of Pennsylvania is asking students for their opinions and perspective on how best to prevent their colleagues from becoming involved in drugs, and preventing addiction.”

The contest is open to Pennsylvania students in grades 6-12 and will be judged in two categories: Middle School, grades 6 – 8 and High School, grades 9 – 12. Students will be divided into 50 regions, competing in their home address senatorial district.  From the 50 semi-finalists in each category, one first, second and third place finalist will be selected for the statewide winners.  Students may enter individually or in a group of up to five students.  The video submitted must address the issue of preventing teens from starting and using drugs –legal and illegal, including underage drinking. This competition is open to all Pennsylvania students enrolled in public, private or home-school, in their appropriate age category.  The attached document outlines additional instructions.

The prizes will be $2500 for 1st, $1500 for 2nd, and $1000 for 3rd place in each category.  Prize money will be deposited into a Tuition Account Program in the winner(s) name.   All entries must be submitted using the registration form available on line at www.acommonwealthcrisis.com/talk-to-your-senator.  All entries MUST be received no later than December 10, 2017.  Winners will be announced by April of 2018.
