Senator Mensch’s Harrisburg Highlights

Dear Friend,

Below are some important Harrisburg updates that may be helpful to you.

·Wednesday, the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee, which I chair, issued a report noting dairy farmers have been struggling with low milk prices and falling demand for years.  Over the past decade, the study found Pennsylvania has seen a 20 percent decline in the number of dairy farms. Herd sizes are also shrinking, which could put Pennsylvania dairies at a disadvantage if the market rebounds.

  • New data released on Friday by the state Department of Labor and Industry shows the unemployment rate held steady at 3.9 percent in August compared to July, which is only slightly higher than the record low from April through June of 3.8 percent.  Five-thousand more Pennsylvanians reported being employed in August compared to July.
  • Legislation that would raise the minimum legal age to buy tobacco and vaping products in Pennsylvania from 18 years of age to 21 passed the Pennsylvania Senate on Wednesday.
