Senator Mensch’s Harrisburg Highlights

Dear Friends,

Below are some important Harrisburg updates that may be helpful to you.

This week, the Pennsylvania Senate held a number of hearings on the Commonwealth’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and we were able to hear from a number of citizens and advocates across Pennsylvania as well as Department Secretaries.

  • On Monday, there was a joint hearing between the Senate Health and Human Services and the Senate Local Government Committees. The focus of the hearing was on the Governor’s rationale surrounding his reopening plan and the basis for his decisions.
  • On Tuesday, a joint hearing was held between the Senate Labor & Industry and Senate Communications and Technology Committees.  This hearing focuses on the inadequate response of the Department of Labor & Industry to handle unemployment compensation claims during this pandemic.
  • Wednesday’s hearing by the Senate Law & Justice Committee focused on the PLCB and their process and inadvertent shutdown during the pandemic.  It was revealed during the hearing that there was no formal decision to close all of the stores and leave all of their employees and customers without any answers.
  • This week’s hearings wrapped up with Thursday’s joint hearing with the Senate Health & Human Services and Aging & Youth Committees holding a hearing to dive into the response to the pandemic in our nursing homes and long-term living facilities.

Video and testimony from all of the hearings is available here.
